My semester at Montclair State University where I have studied Communications and Media Arts has been nothing short of unique. From online classes, to unexpectedly deciding to live at home, this semester has caused me a lot of surprises, but not all have been negative. Overall, I have enjoyed my time and the curriculum I have been involved with. As a student who has never enjoyed school, this came has quite as a surprise up until a few weeks ago when I wrote a speech for my Public Speaking class. The topic I chose to cover was creativity within the public school system and how it is neglected. As I was doing my research, I found some compelling studies which showed how creative kids were likely to be outcast-ed within the public school system because of the lack of creative freedom within the system. A rush of clarity came over me as I was completing this project as to why I was enjoying school so much this semester.

The Major in which I have chosen as given me creative freedom which I have never had for typical school assignments. For example, most of my assignments has established basic guidelines, yet given me the room to till create what I want, to an extent. These areas of freedom where I can express my creativity gives me a chance to do what I am best at. Throughout my semester, I have written personal stories, covered topics which are important to me and did it with complete artistic freedom. With the strict guidelines under a publci school system, I never felt like I was adding anything to the classroom. Yet, under my major at Montclair, I finally feel that I am worthy and that I belong.

My favorite place to express this creativity is through filming. I have been practicing filming since I was in elementary school but started working with the craft professionally for an internship opportunity last year at a Mega Church in Parsippany, New Jersey. As of this year, I have been filming as much Covid-safe events as I can such as small sporting events. Everybody needs film media for their companies so I am aiming to always be working behind a camera for any company who needs film advertising, which is all of them these days. My time at Montclair has taught me that there is a purpose for my creativity in the world. My new confidence has caused me to take what I want, which is opportunities. Nowadays, I am always perfecting my craft from practice and always asking people if they need film work. With my passion, I know I have the grit to thrive in this business.
